Remembering Droylsden

A 216 bus on Manchester Road, about 1966, the council offices are on the left.
This scene shows Droylsden town centre around about 1966 (Which is when I was born). Incidentally it was the last time that England won the world cup, I can't imagine going to a football match on a bus like that !

By all accounts after having spoke to some local folk, if you traveled regularly on a bus into Manchester, you had your 'own' seat. If any 'strangers' got on before you and sat in your seat, the 'owner' would politely bring this to the attention of the person sitting there and ask them to move.

The conductor on the bus would know everyone by name, and would hold the bus for a short while if you weren't at the bus stop in the morning.

Each stop had its own name, such as 'Debtors retreat', 'Lavender Lane' (there was usually a hint of sarcasm or humour in each) The conductor would shout these out as the bus came to a stop.

I intend to find out more about this, watch this space.

Whatever happened to those days ?

This is what it looks like now, complete with the 216 bus !!
